Tutorial 1 : Cultural Heritage Resource Information Systems:
a tool for sustainable management and development
Organiser : Dr Mario Santana Quintero

The purpose of this tutorial is to promote the use of information systems for protection and management of cultural heritage resources. The tutorial contents are based on first-hand case studies, including the GCI/WMF Iraq Cultural Heritage Initiative and the UNESCO’s World Heritage Centre information systems strategy for protection of World Heritage. The appropriate uses of Information Systems for identification and monitoring of cultural resources could increasingly assist stakeholders in preparing policies based on sufficient data for adequate management of sites and therefore generate economical and social benefits to the community. The case studies will introduce tutorial participants to the use of rapid assessment, site recording, Geographic Information Systems and web-based information systems in cultural resource management; outline requirements, conceptualization strategy and implementation of such systems.
